Patricia Holland, bassoon

Patricia Holland has been a member of the Peninsula Music Festival Orchestra since 1999. She is principal bassoonist of the Fox Valley Symphony Orchestra in Appleton WI. She has served as bassoonist or contrabassoonist in numerous other orchestras in Michigan and Wisconsin, including Jackson, Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo, Lansing, Green Bay, Oshkosh, Central Wisconsin and LaCrosse, and in other festivals such as Pine Mountain, Birch Creek and Superior Music Festivals.

Her solo career includes numerous concerto performances and recitals across the United States. Recent solo performances include the concertos for bassoon of Gunther Schuller, Frigyes Hidas and Ellen Taafe Zwilich, as well as Michael Daugherty’s Dead Elvis. She performs with the faculty woodwind quintet at the University of Wisconsin – Stevens Point (UWSP), and was a founding member of Trio Canna, the resident reed trio at UWSP. Trio Canna performed at the annual meeting of the International Double Reed Society, and both ensembles have presented recitals on Wisconsin Public Radio’s live program Sunday Afternoon from the Chazen.

Dr. Holland is Artist/Teacher of Bassoon at UWSP and served as chair of the music department for nine years. Before joining the UWSP faculty in 1994, she taught bassoon, chamber music, double reed methods, and music theory at several colleges in southern Michigan.

Patricia earned her Doctor of Musical Arts degree at The University of Michigan in 1993 under the tutelage of Richard Beene and L. Hugh Cooper. Her Bachelor’s degree is also from The University of Michigan, while the Master’s degree was attained at Michigan State University, studying with Edgar Kirk and Martha Bowman.
