Donald Sipe, trumpet

Donald Sipe's professional activities center around music. He has been performing as a professional trumpet player for 30 years. During that time, he has simultaneously worked as a artist manager, educator, arranger, and producer.

As a performer he has performed throughout the United States, Europe and South America. Sipe is a member of Present Music, Stained Glass Brass, the Wilson Center Big Band, and the Milwaukee Brass Quintet. He teaches trumpet at Carroll University, conducts the Brass Choir at the Milwaukee Youth Symphony Orchestra, and manages the career of internationally known conductor William Eddins.

The range of his performing activities cross many genres. He performed on Peter Gabriel’s New Blood Orchestra Tour (summer 2011), the national touring company of HAIR, and recently premiered and recorded Kamran Ince's opera "The Judgement of Midas" with Present Music.

Sipe has appeared as soloist with the Milwaukee Chamber Orchestra, the Air Force Heritage of America Band (with jazz trumpeter Marvin Stamm), the Waukesha Symphony, Present Music (Quiet City, Unanswered Question), and the National Repertory Orchestra. He has recorded with the Summit Brass, Present Music, the Milwaukee Symphony, Sones de Mexico and new age artist Peter Buffit. He has also worked with a wide range of luminaries including Leonard Bernstein, Doc Severisen, Marvin Hamlisch, Bill Conti, Jerry Goldsmith, Jewel, Il Divo, Aretha Franklin, The Temptations, the Moody Blues, Jerry Lewis and Bob Newhart.

His chamber music credits include the Chicago Symphony Orchestra Brass Ensemble, the Chicago Brass Quintet, Present Music, The Milwaukee Brass Quintet, the Fulcrum Point New Music Ensemble and the Summit Brass. His arrangements for brass quintet have been played by many brass quintets including Chicago Symphony Orchestra Brass Quintet.

Sipe has performed with the Milwaukee Symphony, Milwaukee Chamber Orchestra, and the Milwaukee Ballet Orchestra. He has also performed with the Syracuse Symphony, Omaha Symphony, Green Bay Symphony, the Chicago Sinfonietta, Chicagoland Pops, the Elgin Symphony and the Brass Band of Battle Creek.

In addition to his work as a trumpet player, he is founder and president of two arts companies: Omicron Artist Management and, a CD sales website, is dedicated to chamber music and small group jazz. He is currently developing a project entitled "Presence Under Pressure," which will help individuals and organizations perform their best, even under difficult conditions.

He maintains a small private studio, is a regular coach of the Milwaukee Youth Symphony, and participates in the nationally lauded ACE (Arts in Community Education) program. He is a former Co-principal trumpet of the New World Symphony in Miami, Florida, where he worked with the conductor Michael Tilson Thomas and has participated in several summer music festivals, including Tanglewood Music Festival, Spoleto Festival of Two Worlds, the Woodstock Mozart Festival, the Peninsula Music Festival, and the National Repertory Orchestra in Keystone, CO.

Sipe earned his Bachelor and Master's degrees in music from the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, NY where he studied trumpet with Barbara Butler. He lives in Milwaukee, WI with his wife Jennifer Startt, Principal Second violinist of the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra and their daughter Emmie.
