Gonzalo Farias, conductor

Gonzalo Farias is a young American-trained Chilean conductor. Native of Santiago de Chile, he is a student in the upcoming inaugural class of Marin Alsop at the Peabody Conservatory. Prior working with Ms. Alsop, Mr. Farias attended the University of Illinois serving Donald Schleicher as his Assistant Conductor.

While back in Santiago, he earned his Bachelor degree in piano performance at the P.C. University of Chile. Mr. Farias continued his graduate studies at the New England Conservatory earning a Master´s Degree, Graduate Diploma and Doctoral degrees as a full-scholarship student. He attended the Pierre Monteux School for Conductors where he was awarded the Osher Scholar Prize in conducting. He’s attending the Järvi International Academy this summer in Estonia to work with conductors Neeme Järvi, Paavo Järvi, and Leonid Grin at the Pärnu Music Festival. During this summer, Mr. Farias will serve as an Assistant Conductor at the Peninsula Music Festival under the “Emergent Conductor” program led by Victor Yampolsky. Mr. Farias will be also a Conducting Fellow at the Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music as a recipient of the Bruno Walter Conducting Scholarship.

He is a former Music Director of the Joliet Symphony Orchestra and has served as Assistant Conductor of the Cambridge Symphony Orchestra. He has attended workshops and worked privately with conductors Diane Wittry, Harold Farberman, Larry Rachleff, and Otto Werner Mueller. He has also worked with members of the Boston Chamber Orchestra, Worcester Youth Orchestra, the Norwalk Symphony, Bard Conductor’s Institute Orchestra, Pleven Philharmonic, Bohuslav Martinu Philharmonic, National Symphony of Chile, and Zagreb Philharmonic.
