Sibelius: Symphony No.2, Op. 43, D major
It has become a Peninsula Music Festival tradition to have a program featuring music of Scandanavia celebrating the many connections with nordic music over the festival's history under the title Northern Lights.
The program begins with a remarkable piece for strings by the Estonian composer, Arvo Pårt, Fratres, receiving its first performance at the festival. Percussionist Lisa Pegher performs the Percussion Concerto, Arena, by a young (age 26) composer from Stockholm, Tobias Brostrøm, composed for the Boston Symphony Orchestra and receiving its first festival performance. The program concludes with the remarkable Symphony #2 by Jean Sibelius, last heard here in 2004. This symphony is an amazing leap in the development of Sibelius and will showcase the many talents of the PMF Orchestra.
