Elgar: Pomp & Circumstance, Op. 39, No. 4, in G major *
Walton: Viola Concerto *
Holst: The Planets *
* First PMF performance
This program at the midpoint of the 60th season, like the third program, consists entirely of music not previously heard at the Festival. In contrast to the third program which was all American composers, this one is all British. Joan DerHovsepian, in her fourth PMF solo appearance, performs the too-rarely heard Walton Viola Concerto. Joan DerHovsepian first appeared as soloist at PMF in 2003 in the Penderecki Viola Concerto with Victor Yampolsky conducting and most recently in 2009 in the Bach Brandenburg Concerto #6 with Andrew Sewell conducting. She performed the Berlioz Harold in Italy in 2005 with Victor Yampolsky conducting. The program concludes with Gustav Holst's The Planets. And now that Pluto has been demoted from the Solar System's roster of planets, the Holst composition, once again, includes all the planets. The program opens with the fourth (of five completed) of Elgar's popular Pomp and Circumstance Marches.
