Experience the timeless brilliance of the Classical and early Romantic eras as the Peninsula Music Festival presents “Startles, Sonatas and Struggles,” a captivating evening showcasing masterworks by Haydn and Schubert. This special concert features the exceptional talents of Stefano Boccacci and Ezra Calvino, recipients of the prestigious Karen Smuda Emerging Conductor Scholarship, who bring fresh perspectives and dynamic energy to these beloved classical treasures.
The evening opens with Haydn’s spirited Overture in D, a perfect introduction to the composer’s characteristic wit and inventiveness. Our guest conductors then lead the orchestra through Haydn’s renowned Symphony No. 94, “Surprise”, aptly named for its unexpected fortissimo chord that playfully startles the audience. This symphony is a delicate and audible feast for string lovers, embodying Haydn’s mastery in blending humor with profound musicality.
Following Haydn’s works, the program turns to the lyrical genius of Franz Schubert, beginning with his festive Overture to Rosamunde. Originally written as incidental music to the play Rosamunde, Princess of Cyprus, this captivating work showcases Schubert’s gift for unforgettable melodies in a modified sonata form, qualities that have made it “one of Schubert’s most popular works.”
The evening concludes with Schubert’s delightful Symphony No. 5, a work of youthful exuberance and classical restraint. Characterized by its relatively small orchestration, it pays homage to the styles of Haydn and Mozart. “Playful and fun, with strong classical influences reminiscent of Haydn and Mozart,” the Fifth Symphony provides the perfect finale to an evening celebrating the classical tradition.
This concert offers a unique opportunity to witness the Peninsula Music Festival’s commitment to nurturing the next generation of conducting talent. As recipients of the Karen Smuda Emerging Conductor Scholarship, Boccacci and Calvino represent the bright future of classical music interpretation.
